Totally. I think that's the beauty of GeoRSS  and WMS -- they're damn simple communication method and allows integration with all sorts of systems.

Mapserver and the geospatial web stack is an interesting direction. The newly formed Open Source Geospatial Foundation
 [ https://www.osgeo.org/ ] may be a future venue for worldKit.
